The space reminded us of an aircraft hangar, a long, symmetrical rectangle. Additionally we have a fast turn approach to fashion, much like the arriving and departing of flights. So that gave us "hangar." We sell clothes which gave us "hanger." Well we couldn't decide so we dropped the difference! We also wanted to give a shout-out to our roots in the Mission so added the 16 for "16th St." Now we have HANGR 16. Born and bred in the Mission, for the Mission.
