Помимо практического назначения они имели также эстетическую ценность, донеся до наших дней сцены и события того времени. Люди верили также в силу минералов, наделяя камни дополнительными свойствами. Древнейшая область знаний, существующая по настоящее время-астрология. Камни служили амулетами, и резьба усиливала силу их воздействия. Некоторые камни, такие, как нефрит, сердолик, агаты, органические материалы - янтарь, перламутр имели лечебные свойства.
