Description | The report is necessary for documentation and compliance, but is in no way the central focus of the client-adviser relationship. Professional financial planners adhere to the industry-wide practice of a six-step process in financial advisory, which includes the obligation to implement and review the financial plan. The process is embraced by professional bodies such as the Certified Financial Planner and Chartered Financial Consultant., I agree that product manufacturers will suffer. I think that is to be expected as they cannot incentivize advisers anymore. They will have to complete on price and features. New product manufactures will be able to come to Singapore. Companies such as Vanguard will be able to do business in Singapore and able to distribute their low cost and superior index funds. They are not able to come into our markets because advisers are paid through commissions. If they are paid by clients through fees, advisers can recommend low cost products without worrying about their remuneration. The loss of jobs in the financial sectors will be make up by new employers setting up shops in Singapore due to the removal of the barrier of entry., For prospective clients, be prepared to pay anywhere between $1.85 to $480 per hour of consultation fee. I am sure $1.85 is affordable fee but thats for engaging an adviser who studied for 1 week. The ordinary financial advisers will end up leaving the industry. Therefore, my advice to people who are thinking of joining the industry is this: avoid this industry altogether because there is a massive retrenchment coming. Small firms will disappear. Very large firms will become small. Medium size firms will be acquired by the larger firms. Insurance agencies will probably disappear for which adviser in their right frame of mind will stay in an agency which does not pay them commission? How are they going to justify their consultation fee to their clients when they cannot even provide a comparison between two products from different insurers?, On the other hand, if consumers are willing to pay for actual work rendered, than they can always opt for a simple planning consisting of 2 or 3 hours of consultation and dont expect to eat the entire cake all by themselves. They can just settle on a short-consultation. It is like quality of medical care. If one is poor, there is always a C class ward or B2 ward. If they want superior service, they can opt for A class or private. So stop complaining that the fees are not affordable., We find that less sophisticated agents are more likely to receive a recommendation for the wrong product, suggesting that agents discriminate in the types of advice they provide. This result suggests that the selling of unsuitable products is likely to have the largest welfare impacts on those who are least knowledgeable about financial products in the first place., As MAS considers whether to ban commissions and move the industry to the fee-based regime, the success of the planner depends less and less on the firm but more and more on the individual professional planners own initiative to form his own network of professionals. The most successful financial planner is one who has the winning team of professionals., At the end of the day, advisers are not dumb. They will just sell a very expensive product to cover the cost of killing so many trees. That's why the finance & insurance industry's productivity is the worst and that's why customers will end up paying for the poor productivity., Should the beneficiary goes bankrupt, his or her portion of the share of the assets will end up with the Official Assignee. Thus, these two trusts will fail and it gave them a false sense of security all these years. Well, in line with the general population of having very poor financial literacy, most business owners are unlikely to have made any asset protection plans. However, if they have done, it is unlikely it was done properly., On 9 & 10 May 2012, I conducted marathon workshops on estate planning. This is my first time doing so as I was unsure how the response would be. Each workshop lasted 6 hours. Altogether, there were 16 individuals who attended this talk. I consider it to be a well-received workshop. Below were some of the comments made on the feedback forms., This morning, I gave a talk to parents whose children are attending the Grace Orchard School. Grace Orchard School caters to students who have been diagnosed with Mild Intellectual Disability and those with Mild Autism Spectrum Disorders. My purpose of the talk is to introduce to these parents what is meant to have a financial plan for their children with special needs. My topic was on "How to use SNTC Trusteeship Scheme". There were about 35 attendees., How does MAS appreciate or depreciate the Singapore dollar? Are they using CPF money to do that? Why is the total money supply in US remained relatively unchanged despite the massive printing of money during the financial crisis in 2008?, Today I gave a 1 hour talk to members of the Down Syndrome Association on financial planning for persons with special needs. Special Needs Trust Company was also there to give a 1/2 hour talk. Representative from Center for Enabled Living also present to answer questions relating to Special Needs Saving Scheme, Customer Knowledge Assessment (CKA) and Customer Account Review (CAR) have become a hot topic recently because it is an assessment which investors must go through before they can buy Specific Investment Products. Ironically, CKA and CAR procedures are so complicated that the topic itself requires a seminar to explain! For this talk, my audience were more confused after the talk. I don't blame them because it is really confusing. I have spoken out before, this is one reason why the financial industry's productivity is so low., At the end of the day, is the FA capable of providing pro bono service? The fact that most FA work for free (at least initially) does not mean they are doing pro bono service. In the above Sunday Times article, it was stated that But pro bono work differs from ordinary volunteering because professional skills are needed. Because the financial adviser is not a professional and does not have any professional skills, an FA is NOT CAPABLE of providing pro bono work. They are merely salesperson selling a product using advanced selling techniques. |
